I'm a writer and consultant living in Los Angeles. I have been out here several years, writing screenplays, trying my hand at movie producing, and running my own consulting company that specializes in corporate finance for smaller companies. I spent six years living in the former Soviet Union prior to decamping to LA. My wife is Russian and I have a daughter who was born in November 2003. My company's website is www.davidsonllc.us.

Calera Cement, funded by Indian billionaire Vinod Khosla, sequesters carbon during its production, meaning any building built with it sequesters carbon.
The most common forms of cement currently manufactured release copious amounts of CO2 when manufactured. Obviously this technology would be an improvement.

Photos from Baldwin Street in Dunedin, New Zealand, purported to be the steepest street in the world.

The house is level. The street is not.

For some Americans China's support of farcical Zimbabwean leader Mugabe, Africa's Bush, is strange. According to this article China's stance is based on an agressive policy to colonize Africa with China's excess population, and that for the past two decades the movement has been building steam.

Does anyone remember history? The British are studying whether or not the bad habits of parents can be passed down to their children via damaged genes.
I'm sorry, but a Soviet scientist named Lysenko tried to prove this. He claimed he could develop seeds that would grow hardier cold weather crops by soaking in cold solutions, thus making the tundra potential farmland. His announced successes turned out to be total shams.
In the British study they are trying to show smoking at early age in the father leads to obese children. Sorry, the percentage of ALL children being obese worldwide has increased, especially in the US where SMOKING IS DOWN. Obesity is connected with diet and exercise. Add high fructose corn syrup and video games, reduce exercise, and you will get obese children. Parental smoking only counts if it indicates the social class of the parents, meaning less opportunities for fresh air and exercise.

What's this? Congress actually contemplating doing something smart? There's talk in Washington of raising the gas tax by ten cents a gallon.
This is the measure most of the rest of the world uses to fund roads and keep their populace from driving idiotic SUVs. I hope it gets done.

Something my family is thinking about that makes great sense now that gas is $4 a gallon - buying a scooter or two. Here's a great article from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on the rush to scooters in the US.
